TOWN OF STOCKBRIDGE Named from the Stockbridge Indians who were the owners and occupants of most of the town. Stockbridge has extensive deposits of limestone and gypsum. The latter exists in the east ridge in the north part of town. Stockbridge ranked second in the production of hops. The New York, Ontario and Western railroads extend through the town. There were fifteen common school districts in the town. The population of the town in 1875 was 1,967. Stockbridge was the home of the Oneida, Tuscarora, and Stockbridge Indians. The first settlement was made in 1791. The first town meeting was held at Munnsville June 7, 1836.

The town of Munnsville has a population of about 400 people. The first merchant was Asa Munn, who came from Augusta in 1817. The post office at Munnsville was established 140 years ago.
