December is FAFSA Filing Time!
December is the time parents/guardians should be filling out their FAFSA application for Federal Student Aid if their child hopes to receive any need based grants, loans or federal work study while in college.
IMPORTANT! The US Department of Education is no longer sending out paper copies of the FAFSA to high school. The online application is encouraged (www.fafsa.ed.gov) .
FAFSA is free to fill out and you should never have to pay to fill it out. A PIN number is required prior to filling out the FAFSA; a PIN can be obtained any time atwww.pin.ed.gov
TAP Awards: Students who are NY residents and plan on attending a college/university in NY should also apply for TAP (Tuition Assistance Program). Typically TAP awards range from $500-$5,000 for students. Filing for the TAP award starts with filing out the FAFSA. There is a link provided on the FAFSA that parents can apply for TAP through. If you choose to file for TAP at a later date, you can apply online at www.tapweb.org. Again you will need to apply for a PIN.
Parents and Students should begin to fill out the FAFSA and TAP early, and even if taxes are not done, parents can estimate figures. You can later make any necessary changes to the FAFSA or TAP by filing out a change form.
