Stockbridge Valley to Conduct Mandated Lockdown Drills

October 3, 2016

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Re:       Lockdown Drills – School Safety

Please be aware that the safety of our students and our school programs are of the upmost importance. You may be aware that the New York State Education Department (NYSED) has mandated public schools conduct four (4) annual lockdown drills per year. The purpose of this letter is to inform you that the Stockbridge Valley CSD will begin practicing these during this school year. These drills are intended to provide instruction and practice for our students, faculty, and staff so they are prepared to react and properly respond to emergencies in a timely and effective manner.

These lockdown drills are designed to prepare our faculty for an immediate threat to life, safety, and operations of our school programs.  Such drills will cause minimal interruption to academic activities and will involve the clearance of hallways, locking of classrooms and positioning of students and staff in pre-designated “safe areas” within each room. These drills are part of a comprehensive Safety Plan that has been in place and communicated to our faculty since the start of the 2016/2017 school year and each school year previously.

Since the very nature of this type of drill implies a threat to the school community we want to make sure students, staff, and parents/guardians are aware of an impending drill. Drills will be announced as a Lockdown DRILL to avoid undue fear and anxiety among students, staff, and parents/guardians. Additionally, we will inform faculty, and students, that a drill will be conducted prior to the actual drill announcement.

Our goal is to practice these and other types of drills to increase our level of proficiency in the event of an emergency situation for the safety our students and staff. We will be scheduling 2 lockdown drills prior to December 23rd and we will follow-up with two additional lockdown drills from January 3rd through June 9th.

Our first drill is scheduled to be conducted the week of October 3, 2016. The remaining drills will be considered “unannounced” to better prepare our students and staff and will not be preceded by any written notification.

Thank you in advance for your understanding of these requirements in our efforts to safeguard our students and staff.
